Shrieking Harpies

Traditionally, there were three of them: Aello (or Aellopus) meaning Whirlwind or Stormfoot; Ocypete, meaning Swift Wing; and Thyella (or Celaeno).

They were the daughters of Electra, a Nereid, and Thaumas, the son of Pontus and Gaia. They live in a cave in Crete. Originally portrayed as beautiful maidens, later legends painted these three sisters as always ravenously hungry. They were often called the Dogs of Zeus (Hades?), and lived in filth and excrement. The name Harpy means "Snatcher."

In "The Odyssey," the Harpies were regarded as storm winds. Before that, however, they were considered the Goddess Athena in her vengeful form.

From beautiful maidens who represented a powerful goddess's fury to shit-throwing noisy filthy ravenous shriek beasts who bedevil men, harpies are a fantastic example of the way the kyriarchy has changed the way women and femininity are viewed and treated.

Ugh, I feel dirty even posting this. This one, again, goes out to all you fuckers who claim that straight up outright racism isn’t a problem anymore.

So, check this out. I grew up in the mid-west, attended high school in the late 1990s. At one point I overheard a bunch of white guys who lived in an all-white suburb, all of them from the mid-west, joke about going “coon hunting” with the intention of seeking out and hassling Black people. Yes, this was over a decade ago, but that is REALLY REALLY RECENT considering. This shit has to stop.
